University of Kent’s scholarships for politics

Applications are invited for two scholarships for politics students wishing to begin their studies at the University of Kent’s Brussels School of International Studies in January 2009.

The University of Kent has established a studentship fund of £1.5M to support research students. This fund allows the University to provide support for more than 100 students in any one year.

Successful candidates will be registered at the University of Kent as full-time students on one of the five politics programmes offered at UKB (listed below) and will receive payment to cover 50% of their tuition fees.

These scholarships are open to students of all nationalities and are valid for the following programmes:

DAAD Scholarships for PG courses for professionals from developing countries

Investigation of radiative energy losses from tungsten plasmas.

The next generation fusion reactor ITER, being built at Cadarache will use tungsten as a wall material. Although a lot of data already exists, more work needs to be done to understand the behaviour of tungsten ions in hot plasma. The project first addresses the need for spectral line and unresolved line array identification in tungsten plasmas for use as a plasma diagnostic and also explores the radiation loss mechanisms from moderately ionised tungsten ions and the potential problems that may arise in attaining the temperatures required for fusion should the ion density become large enough.

The research will be carried out in the Atomic, Molecular and Plasma Physics Group at UCD ).

Rhodes Scholarship 2008

Applications are invited from outstanding graduates holding at least a first class honors in degree in Pure or Applied Sciences, Humanities, Law or Medicine of Indian Universities for five scholarships, for a course of study leading to a degree of the University of Oxford (UK).

Candidates in the final year of their degree course with exceptional academic record may also apply. Candidates must demonstrate their continuing interest and achievement in extra curricular activities such as sports, theatre and community work. They must be below 25 years of age on October 1, 2009.

General Regulations
A Rhodes Scholarship is tenable at the University of Oxford. Confirmation of the Scholarship at election is however, subject to the Scholar-elect's acceptance by a college and by the concerned faculty in case of a research degree. Election to the scholarship is normally for two years but the scholarship may be held for one year only, depending upon the degree programme pursued by the scholar. The trustees impose no requirement that a scholar should study in Oxford for more than one year. A scholarship may be renewed, at the complete discretion of Trustees, for a third and final year for those who were initially admitted to Oxford to pursue a doctoral degree.

A Rhodes Scholarship covers approved university and college fees and other charges for which payment is made directly to the Scholar's college. It also covers living expenses sufficient to enable a Scholar to meet the necessary expenses for term-time and vacations. The Trust will also meet the cost of a Scholar's air travel, economy class, to the United Kingdom and of return to India on completion of studies at Oxford.

Tenure of other awards in conjunction with a Rhodes Scholarship is not permitted without prior consultation with the Secretary to the Trust in Oxford.

The Scholarship for which application is to made in 2008 will be tenable from October 2009

Conditions of Eligibility
1. The Scholarships are open to citizens of India.

2. Candidates must be of such an age that they will have passed their 19th and not have passed their 25th birthday on the 1st October 2009.

3. Candidates must have at least a first class degree in Humanities, Sciences, Law, Engineering, Agriculture or Medicine from an Indian University. Candidates who are in the Final year of a degree course and have exceptionally bright academic record may also apply.

4. Candidates for medical studies should consult the Secretary, as well as the Medical School Offices at Oxford, before submitting an application. Particular difficulties may arise for those wishing to do research in clinical departments.

5. Marriage is not a bar to applying for, or holding, a Rhodes scholarship. However, married candidates should bear in mind that the scholarship stipend is sufficient only for one person, and that the Trust takes no financial responsibility for the support of a scholar's spouse. Moreover, spouses who are not British citizens will find it very difficult to obtain permission to undertake paid work in England.

The Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF) invites submissions for the Ernst-Otto-Czempiel Award for peace research. The award, in honour of the former director of PRIF, is endowed with 5,000.- euros and will be given for the best postdoctoral monograph published in the field of peace research in 2006 or 2007. Ph.D. theses and books by authors of the age of 45 or older at the date of publication are excluded.

Nominations and self-nominations are possible. Every nomination should contain the name, full address and e-mail address of the author and the title of the book. In the case of self-nomination, the application should in addition contain a CV, a list of publications, and a copy of the book. The nomination deadline is July 15, 2008.

University of Sydney Mid-Year admissions 2008

UAC Mid-Year Domestic admissions 2008
Introduction
The University of Sydney will be offering a small number of new domestic undergraduate student places for Semester 2, 2008 through UAC's Mid-Year undergraduate admissions process. Applications can be made online at UAC. There is a UAC 2008 Mid-Year Admissions Supplement (to the UAC Guide) available now from the Student Centre counter and as a download from UAC.

Applications open on Wednesday 9 April and close on Friday 13 June.

The information on this page should be read in conjunction with the University of Sydney entry in the Supplement.

International students who applied for admission through UAC for 2008 will be able to have their application considered for International Mid-Year admission. Other International students should contact the International Office.

Courses available
The list of courses offered for Mid-Year admission is now available. You cannot apply for courses that do not appear on the courses list. If you are considering applying for a Domestic Fee-paying (DFEE) course, you should be aware of the tuition costs. Students taking up a Commonwealth-supported (HECS) place in Semester 2 will be able (if appropriate) to either take out a HECS-HELP loan or pay the student contribution upfront.

Applicant ranking
All applicants for UAC Mid-Year admission are ranked in a standard manner equivalent to the January UAC admission session. Applicants should be aware that all tertiary attempts in 2008 (Semester 1), regardless of the results gained, are ignored in the ranking process, because the UAC Mid-Year offers are made prior to the general release of Semester 1 results.

As a result, applicants will be assessed and ranked on their 'qualifications' gained prior to 2008. For most applicants this will be their NSW UAI (or equivalent). In addition, some applicants will also be considered on the basis of tertiary study attempts of at least one full-time year. Applicants with more than one 'qualification' may be assessed on a combination of these results.

Applicant selection
In a similar way to the January UAC intake, applicants are selected in descending rank order until the required number of offers are generated. Applicants are considered separately for CSP and DFEE preferences and may receive an offer for both a CSP and DFEE course. There is only one 'round' of offers in the UAC Mid-Year admissions session.

Entry standards for Mid-Year admissions may vary from those in January. The number of applicants, their qualification ranks and the number of places available are the factors that determine the entry standard for each course. In previous years, the entry standards (UAI cut-off) for some courses have been higher than those reported in January. For most courses, the January entry standard will apply to the Mid-Year session.

Applicants should be aware that entry standards will not be lower than those set in January 2008.

Applicants may seek further information and advice from the Admissions Office prior to submitting a UAC Mid-Year application. The UAC application processing charge is non-refundable.

Offers and enrolment
UAC Mid-Year offers are released on the UAC website on Monday 30 June at 9am. If you receive an offer of admission to the University of Sydney, you will be invited to accept your offer by enrolling in-person at the University on Wednesday 9 July. Detailed enrolment information will be available to you at that time.

You will not be able to defer your enrolment if you receive a UAC Mid-Year offer for the University of Sydney.

Beijing International Education expo

The 2008 Beijing International Education expo opens in the capital. In its fifth year, the expo is one of the largest platforms of its kind in Asia. Besides providing information about international student exchanges, this year, the expo also focuses on the capital's rich educational resources.

A visitor said, "Extremely hard. Now you see I'm out of breath. It's my first attempt at professional rowing. Before I have only rowed on lakes in parks. "

The expo also showcases latest developments in the capital's education system. In September, high middle school students in Beijing will have a new subject. It will call upon students to apply their knowledge to paper - to design and build a creation all their own.

Wang Wei, physics teacher of Beijing Shunyi No. 10 Middle School, said, "Our school is one of the experimental sites for the course. The result is if there are 50 students, there will be 50 productions. It helps the young minds to create based on a full-round knowledge like Math, physics, art and so on."

The expo is more international than ever before. About 200 colleges and universities from 18 countries have joined. For the first time, students can also go through the process of studying abroad at the simulation gallery.

All of these are double degrees where students can obtain a European Degree as well as a French National University Degree and there are two intakes per year, March and October.

Vatel offers a complete under-graduate, post-graduate and EMBA programme which lasts 5 years.

Hotel Management: Vatel Nimes offers 3 different degrees that are taught in English and that cater to a student’s educational level and professional experience. All of these are double degrees where students can obtain a European Degree as well as a French National University Degree.

- Undergraduate level : European Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel Management & French National University Degree

- Graduate Level : European Master’s Degree in Hotel Management & French National University Degree

- Postgraduate level : Executive MBA in International Hotel Management & French National University Degree

Accommodation: Vatel Nimes ensures accommodation and meals during the academic studies.

During the internship semester, free food and accommodation are provided by the hotel where students are doing their internship(s).

Free Service: Pick–up service, assist students when opening a bank account, administrative formalities (student’s residence card, social insurance, housing allowance ...), internships, internet access (WIFI and ADSL), free carpark, etc.
