BIGSSS Ph.D Fellowships 2015


Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences- BIGSSS invites applications to its PhD programme scheduled to commence on September 1, 2015.


BIGSSS offers 15 Ph.D. stipends of 1,300 euros/ month for 36 months, contingent on successful completion of each year. To support its Ph.D. fellows in achieving early scientific independence, it also provides funds for conducting, presenting and publishing research. There is no separate funding application, because all admitted applicants receive a stipend.


Successful applicants will pursue a topic in one of the three fields: global governance and regional integration, welfare state, inequality and quality of life, changing lives in changing socio-cultural contexts.

Eligibility: Candidates must have an MA degree (or national equivalents like the German “Diplom” or “Magister”) in a discipline related to political science, sociology, psychology, or related social science disciplines like.law, economics or mass communication. The degree must be completed by the end of July 2015 as well as display proficiency in English

The Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin, German: Freie Universität Berlin) is the second largest of the four universities in Berlin. Research at the university is focused on humanities and social sciences and on health and natural sciences. In October 2007, it was awarded "elite university" status by the German Science Foundation for the quality of its research through the Initiative for Excellence of the German government, which will translate into additional funding.

Freie Universität Berlin is a leading research institution. It is one of nine German universities that met with success in all three funding lines in the federal and state Excellence Initiative, thereby receiving additional funding for its institutional future development strategy. Freie Universität can thus take its place as an “International Network university” in the global competition among universities. Its future development strategy is focused around three strategic centers: for cluster development, for international exchange, and for graduate studies. Development and assessment of research projects takes place within three major focus areas – area studies, humanities, and life sciences. Freie Universität has various offices abroad, e.g., in New York, Beijing, and Moscow, that provide a platform for international cooperation. The Times Higher Education Supplement world rankings in Arts and Humanities of 2008 place the FU Berlin 3rd best in Europe, and 24th in the world.

History

It was founded in 1948 by students and staff who were relegated because of their political views from Humboldt University of Berlin, formerly the traditional Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität of Berlin, and at that time controlled by the authorities in the Soviet sector. In 1968, it was the center of the left-wing German student movement in parallel to that in Paris, London, and Berkeley. Activists of that time included the SDS and Rudi Dutschke. By the 1980s, it had become the largest German university with 66,000 students. With the restructuring of the Humboldt University after the German reunification, the Freie Universität Berlin was downsized to about 38,000 students in the 1990s.

Postgraduate Courses for Professionals with Relevance to Developing Countries

1. General Information about the programme
• Postgraduate courses for young professionals from developing countries
• Duration: 12-24 months, depending on the particular institution
• Internationally recognised Master’s degree
• Includes German Universities and “Fachhochschulen” (Universities of Applied Science)
• Support of selected programmes with a variety of full or partial scholarships
• Funded by the BMZ (Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development), but admission
also open to self-fi nanced participants or students fi nanced through government or other sources
• Academic year 2009/2010

2. Prerequisites and Requirements
The typical scholarship holder:
• Will come either from a public authority or a state or private company in a developing country and, as such, be engaged in the planning and execution of directives and projects with emphasis on development policies having a bearing on technological, economic or social areas.
• Holds a Bachelor’s degree (4 years) in related subject.
• Will have completed an academic degree far beyond average and at least two years of related professional experience.
• Is not older than 36 (for some courses the age limit is 32). Please refer to the course details on the
following pages.

Language skills:
• For courses in German: DSH 2 or TestDaF 4; at time of application German skills at completed level A2 are required. In addition German language courses at level A3 or B1 are highly recommended.
• For courses in English: TOEFL (minimum score: 550 paper based, 213 computer based, 80 Internet based) or IELTS (band 6) certificate

Note: some courses may expect different level. For detailed information see the relevant course
introduction on the following pages.
• Exception: candidates for the course at Reutlingen University need a very good command of German at time of application

Proof of current work situation:
All applicants should state their current work situation at the time of application and submit a letter of
reference from their employer, ideally guaranteeing employment after completion of the postgraduate
course.

Statement of motivation:
Applicants must submit a statement of motivation explaining why they are interested in attending a
particular postgraduate course with reference to their current employment.
