International Women’s Day Scholarships are now open to girls and women in our region. There are 7 individual scholarships of $2,000 each up for grabs.

Each year, the International Women’s Day Illawarra Committee awards seven individual scholarships of $2,000 each to encourage women in our community, who might not otherwise have the opportunity, to expand their knowledge, skill and experience in a field of their interest or in which they have shown great potential.

Through the support of sponsors and attendees at the annual event, the IWD Illawarra Committee funds six of the seven scholarships while the family of Gracie Wallis fund the scholarship named in her honour.

Applications are now open! We will be accepting applications for 2021 up until 5pm on Monday 22nd February.

FirstRand International Postgraduate Scholarships 2021

FirstRand International Postgraduate Scholarships 2021

FirstRand offers funding to pursue postgraduate studies internationally to selected academically gifted South African students, with excellent leadership qualities and the potential to be future destiny changers. 

There are five scholarships available to South African citizens, all of which are for international postgraduate study. These are:

  • FirstRand Laurie Dippenaar scholarship;
  • FirstRand Foundation scholarship;
  • FirstRand Oxford African Studies scholarship to the University of Oxford;
  • FirstRand FNB Fund Oxford education scholarship; and
  • FirstRand FNB Fund scholarship for international postgraduate study in education.

Applications, including all attachments and reference letters, must be completed online and applicants must have applied directly to the university of their choice by the time the application is submitted.

Applications will be treated in the strictest confidence.
The decisions of the adjudication panels are final and correspondence regarding their decision will not be entered into. The panels reserve the right not to make an award.

Applications open 16 December 2020 and close 4 March 2021. No late applications will be accepted.

Criteria :

The successful candidates will have excelled academically in their chosen field and will have been able to demonstrate:

  • leadership qualities;
  • strength of character;
  • community involvement; and
  • the potential to be a destiny changer in his or her chosen field.
  • candidates who are currently, or have been studying overseas, will not be considered for this scholarship; and.
  • successful candidates are required to return to South Africa for at least five years after completing their studies.

Process :

Confirmation of each received application will be emailed to the applicant upon receipt of his or her application.

All applications are evaluated by at least three preliminary evaluators from FirstRand, FNB, RMB, TSI and previous winners of the scholarship. A long list of around 40 applicants is then drawn up and interviewed in person, Covid-19 allowing, in Cape Town or Sandton or electronically on Microsoft Teams.

Four shortlisted candidates are selected for the two education scholarships and should be available for final interviews held in Sandton on 14 May 2021.

Ten shortlisted candidates are selected for the FirstRand Laurie Dippenaar and FirstRand Foundation international postgraduate scholarships and the FirstRand Oxford African Studies scholarship and should be available for final interviews held in Sandton on Tuesday 18 May 2021.

A final announcement will be made before the end of May 2021.

Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development -SEED

The Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) program provides students, from member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), with short-term exchange opportunities for study or research in Canadian post-secondary institutions at the college, undergraduate and graduate levels.

Funding for SEED scholarships is made available by Global Affairs Canada through its legal title: the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD).

The Canadian institution will receive funding from DFATD for all successful candidates in the form of a contribution agreement and will be responsible for providing the funds to scholarship recipients.

The scholarship value varies depending on the duration and level of study. The scholarship value for students is:

  • CAD 10,200 for college, undergraduate or graduate students (Master’s and PhD) for a minimum of four months or one academic term of study or research;
  • CAD 12,700 for graduate students (Master’s and PhD) for a period of five to six months of study or research; or
  • CAD 15,900 for undergraduate and college students for a period of eight months or two academic terms of study or research.

In addition to the funds allocated to the recipients by DFATD, the Canadian host institution may also claim CAD 500 per scholarship recipient to assist with administrative costs once the scholarship recipient arrives in Canada.

Only Canadian institutions can submit applications on behalf of candidates. They may choose to set their own internal deadline to receive supporting documentation.

The Stephen Semprevivo Startup Scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to students interested in starting their own business. Students are recognized for their ideas and capacities, as well as their commitment to being an entrepreneur.

As the 1st class in 2021, the Stephen Semprevivo Scholarship will select 2 student entrepreneurs to receive $2,500. Winners will also receive 20 hours of assistance on their business plan or strategy, and two Startup books from Stephen Semprevivo’s list of favorites.

To be an ideal candidate of these programs, you must be a high school, vocational school, college, or university student who are or will be enrolled in an accredited post secondary institution of higher learning for an associate’s or bachelor’s degree or certificate program. For candidates, it is mandatory to be a legal resident of the fifty the United States.

National Cyber League-NCL has announced a new set of scholarships to help financially disadvantaged students at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) compete in its latest competition and to offer scholarships for students to participate in the NCL Spring 2021 Games.

HBCU computer science students may be stressed about their future careers. How will they land a good job in these crazy times of a pandemic and racial unrest? One way to stand out from the crowd is by taking advantage of the learning and community engagement of the NCL games. Students gain hands-on skills while having fun playing in the nine NCL cybersecurity categories. Begin by completing the application below. Please include the name of the coach/instructor most likely to encourage your participation. You must be a student at a Historically Black College or University to receive the scholarship; otherwise, feel free to register through regular registration, which costs $35 for the Season.

Hebrew University of Jerusalem has launched MA programme in Smart Cities and Urban Informatics. Taught by the Department of Geography, Faculty of Social Sciences, the programe seeks to develop the new area of higher education and equip a new generation of urban planners, analysts and policy makers.

The programme is curated for social science students who want to acquire a broad-based understanding of contemporary urban development utilising state of the art techniques in spatial analysis.

The programme focuses on smart cities and urban informatics. 

Smart Cities and Urban Informatics (SCUI) is a unique 1-year (2 semester), English language, 32- credit MA program offered to international students.

The Goal of the Program is to equip a new generation of urbanists (planners, analysts and policy makers) with the requisite tool box for addressing the development of the Smart City. This includes both the hands-on analytical skills and the critical faculties to address the current and anticipated future challenges posed by Smart Cities.  The Hebrew University has an agenda to become a leader in this field where prospects for growth worldwide seem unbounded (autonomous vehicles, volunteered geographic information, Internet of Things etc). The Social Science Faculty has a mandate to develop a new social science agenda in this area and the SCUI program advances this goal.

Applications are open for the Obama Foundation Scholars Program 2021-22 at Columbia University, New York.

The Obama Foundation Scholars Program at Columbia University is a full-time, fully-funded leadership development program that brings together rising leaders from the United States and around the world who have demonstrated a commitment to finding solutions to challenges in their communities, countries, and regions. Over the course of an academic year at Columbia University, Obama Foundation Scholars deepen their knowledge and skills and build new capacities and networks to accelerate their impact in their home countries.

Upon completion of the program, Obama Foundation Scholars, empowered by their experience, return to the regions where they have been working and continue along a path of service.

Since 2018, the Obama Foundation Scholars Program at Columbia University has welcomed:

  • 34 rising leaders from 29 countries who have demonstrated a commitment to finding solutions to challenges in their communities, countries, and regions
  • Scholars who were, on average, 35 years of age, with ages ranging from 25 to 45

The BCC Foundation’s scholarship program awards students over $1,300,000 annually through merit based scholarships and the Financial Aid Grants-in-Aid program.
